The ISSA Section on Prevention in Transportation together with its member, BG Verkehr, has produced five fact sheets on COVID-19 infection protection measures for various transportation sectors. The fact sheets feature industry-specific recommendations for infection protection measures for transportation workers involved in road haulage, waste disposal, postal logistics/CEP, taxi, and driving schools. The fact sheets are available in six languages English, German, Polish, Turkish, Russian, and Romanian. The sheets can be downloaded free from the BG Verkehr media catalogue.

Fact sheet recommendations feature the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) real-time occupational safety standards. These occupational health and safety standards inform the guidelines for the protection against infection across all sectors. For specific work situations, company physicians and occupational safety specialists should be consulted.

Since information on the coronavirus and related health protection is developing dynamically, fact sheets are regularly reviewed and updated. Current information is available on the BG Verkehr coronavirus information page.

The International Media Festival for Prevention (IMFP) is an integral part of the World Congress on Safety & Health at Work that happens every three years. The festival showcases films and multimedia products on safety and health at work. Winners are selected by an international jury. Awards are announced and presented at the Special Media Session that opens the World Congress. This year’s Toronto Congress is postponed until September 2021.

Prior to the COVID-19 shutdown, the festival received 289 outstanding media products from all over the world. Due to COVID-19, the IMFP international jury met virtually and selected 50 media products from which nominees and winners will be selected. All Short List productions will be presented at the IMFP Cinema next year in Toronto.

The Short List will be announced on 6 October 2020 during the World Congress Digital Meeting being held online free of charge. To virtually attend, register in early September 2020 on the World Congress website at www.safety2021canada.com/specialsession.

Winners of the IMFP will be announced and presented at the Special Media Session on 20 September 2021 in Toronto.

More than 350,000 new malware programmes are detected every day. Large organizations are not the only ones at risk for cyberattacks. Small businesses using digital networks can just as easily find themselves victims of hackers. Any device or machine with an internet connection can have many security gaps. A malfunction or a failure of IT systems can very quickly damage an organization’s public image, compromise important data, and adversely impact production. Reasonable IT protection can, however, be achieved through relatively simple measures.

The ISSA Prevention Section on Machine and System Safety has developed two fact sheets:

Safe Passwords in Small Enterprises
These sheets describe measures to help small enterprises reduce the risk of cyberattacks.

The ISSA study, “Calculating the International Return on Prevention for Companies,” provides compelling evidence that prevention pays off. But there are even more reasons occupational safety and health is important from an executive’s perspective. The ISSA Prevention Section for Electricity, Gas and Water has published a new leaflet entitled, “10 Reasons Why Your CEO Should be Convinced to Take OSH Seriously.” The leaflet provides short and concise incentives for executive consideration, including return on investment (ROI), productivity, business mastery, and improved human resource outcomes.

Safe Work Australia is a corresponding member of the ISSA Prevention Section on Information for Prevention.

Safe Work Australia data shows that in 2017–18 over 100,000 serious workers’ compensation claims were made relating to work-related injuries and illnesses involving a week or more off work. The impact of this is felt in the daily lives of workers, by their employers, and by their families and communities.

In partnership with government, business, industry and unions, Safe Work Australia developed the National Return to Work Strategy 2020–2030 (the Strategy), an ambitious 10-year action plan to improve return to work outcomes for workers with a work-related injury or illness. The Strategy is an evidence-based framework focused on minimising the impact of work-related injury and illness and optimising workers’ recovery and capacity to work. “Workers are at the heart of the Strategy – we want to help them recover and return to a safe and supportive workplace,” said Safe Work Australia CEO, Michelle Baxter.

The return to work process can be complex and involves a range of stakeholders. The Strategy aims to better support workers through this process and help stakeholders do the same. To date, Australian states and territories have largely worked independently on return to work processes. The Strategy has been widely welcomed as a plan for national action.“The Strategy is built on a shared commitment to improve outcomes for workers and pave the way for ongoing national collaboration,” Ms. Baxter added.

The Strategy’s primary audience are those who influence work and workplaces, including policy makers, workers’ compensation authorities, employers, union and industry groups, insurers and claims management organisations, treating health practitioners, workplace rehabilitation providers, and other worker advocates.

The National Return to Work Strategy and related resources are available on the Safe Work Australia website. You can find a suite of short animations that summarise the Strategy and its five action areas, provide updates on the national initiatives that are underway, and share information on the measurement framework that will be used to track the success of the Strategy.
